You Think You Know...About Lauren from Mrs. Thompson's Treasures

I'm so excited to share some things about me with you all today!

I am moving to the other side of the world in August! Yes, my husband and I are packing up our 4 kids and moving from Texas to the U.A.E. We will be working with an organization to do some non-profit work. We have lived overseas before, and we are excited to do it again! Our lives are crazy hectic right now as we get everything ready to move, but we are looking forward to it.

Even though we are leaving soon, Waco will still be our home base, and there are so many reasons to come visit!

Baylor University

I did not actually go to Baylor (my mom did!), but I love the school and there are so many great things happening there!

Chip, Jo Jo, & Magnolia

HGTV's show Fixer Upper is filmed right here in Waco, and Chip and Jo Jo's shop, Magnolia, is just a mile down the road from my house!

Dr. Pepper Museum
Built in 1906 - this was the first building dedicated to bottling Dr. Pepper!

Something I love to do with students (in the classroom, or at home with my own kids) is have "Yay & Yuck" time each week. This is a time where everyone gets to share a "Yay," something good that happened, and a "Yuck," something not so good that happened. It's a great way to let kids express their feelings and it lets you in on what is happening in their lives. I find that it really helps them know that you care! It can also be a great lesson in celebrating with each other, and helping our friends through hard times.

I was actually a nutrition major when I began college. After two years, I was trying to get in to a special program that would let me finish my bachelors and masters in the next 3 years. But, space was limited, and I didn't get in to the program. So I changed colleges and decided to study elementary education. I actually was not passionate about it at first, it was just something I thought I could do. But after several classes, I fell in love with the idea of teaching and being with kids. Now, I can't imagine doing anything else!

I would say that there are very few things in teaching that have ONE right way to do them. There are so many great ways to be a teacher. My words of wisdom would be to find ways to teach that work for you! And of course, don't get stuck in a rut - be open to listening and learning from your students and change things up if you need to!

You Think You Know... About Keri from Enchanted Kinder Garden

Hey guys! It's Keri from Enchanted Kinder Garden. I'm bringing you a little bit "more" about me. Let me just say when we discussed having this as a topic, I really wanted some "juicy" stuff. I didn't get that, so no juicy info for you all. I PROMISE to try and get some juicy questions next time.

I had a REALLY hard time coming up with this one. There is so many things that people don't know about me. A few that crossed my mind were my extra shyness, love/hate relationship with driving even though I'm always on the road, or something totally random that I don't even want to mention.

However, I didn't like any of those. I texted one of my guy friends and as soon as I started typing the text, it came to me! I am SUCH a girl. I love dresses. I like to shop. I like to do all of the normal girly things. I'm all about something pink. You get it... however, I am such a DUDE.

*sighs*

I swear I relate more to guys than I do to women sometimes. The thing that you would never guess about me is that I love video games. Like. Seriously. Obsessed.

I am a SERIOUS video game junkie. I don't have as much time as I used to, but if I start playing anything, I'm surely going to waste the day away. I won't go into detail about what I play, but my current love is on the computer. I can still pick up a controller and whoop some major butt in Mario Kart 64.

Is that reason enough?

There isn't much to do in the city that I live in. However, it is SO much to do around me. I live about 30 minutes from Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and a little less than an hour from Pensacola Beach. Life is so much better when you're close to a beach. I live in between Mobile and Gulf Shores.

There is ALWAYS a festival of some sort going on. The Shrimp Festival comes after the school year starts and it's My FAVE! There's always live bands, great food, and tons of things to buy.

Mardi Gras is another reason. They have Mardi Gras parades/celebrations/balls in Mobile, but I prefer New Orleans. It's also nice that we get days built into our school calendar to be off for Mardi Gras. YEP! Living the life down here.

SO. MUCH. FUN! The parades are crazy bananas. They last HOURS. The parades start weeks before Fat Tuesday is even near. This is how much excitement is built up about it.

We even had a Mardi Gras parade at school before! Total craziness.

You should come visit me because I am a good time, duh!!!!! That's the only reason.

Since I started teaching, one thing that I do every single year is either make a memory book or I make a class dvd. This year, I made two dvds. We made an Alphabet one as well. I got the idea from a Youtube video. Mine is NOT this elaborate. We did it all in the last month of school. I'm pretty sure they made each letter as they taught it. Here's what my DVDs look like on the outside.

That's my goal for next year. Here's the inspiration for my video. I just thought it was so stinkin' cute.

I honestly don't really remember. I remember playing school when I was younger. When I got a little older, I wanted to be an obstetrician. What was I thinking?! I went to college and majored in computer information systems. Three years in, I started volunteering at a local school for a few hours a week. I started skipping, ahem, spending more time at the school than I did studying and in my actual courses. After finishing my third year, I knew I needed something different. I changed my major at the end of that semester and started taking classes that summer for Elementary Education. That's pretty much how I knew I wanted to be a teacher.

This isn't really a profession or job to me. It's my life. It's fun. It's exciting and there is rarely a dull moment. I'm happy I was able to figure it out before I finished college with a CIS career and ended up hating it.

Teaching is hard, but just remember why you started. Take the bad days and use them to make the next day a better day. The great thing about teaching is that no one expects you to be perfect. Every day is a day to learn how to be better.

You Think You Know...About Kelsey from Aloha to Second

Hello everyone!  I am back to share with you some things you might not know about me.  I know I've been blogging with the Elementary Entourage since we started, and I feel like I've been able to get to know so many bloggers.  Yet, there are still so many things I don't know!  This round of posts has been super fun and exciting.  I hope you learn something new about me. :]

I met my husband in 2007 - my freshman year of college.  He is the love of my life, and I can't imagine not having him in it!

He is in the United States Marine Corps.  He is in the reserves, so he leaves one weekend a month, and two weeks in the summer.  It's not bad at all!

When we first started dating, I was not fond of the Marine Corps.  I always hoped that he would get out as soon as his contract was up!  But now...I absolutely love it, and I can't imagine not being a part of the USMC family!

I was going to share a quick story.  We had been dating for about a year, and Tyler asked me if I would stay with him if he were ever deployed.  I was young and thought this would never happen to him.  So, I responded by saying, "No way! I am young, and can't date someone thousands of miles away."  The next day, he told me that he was going to be deployed to Iraq.  I was completely devastated.  But...I obviously did NOT break up with him.  I had been stupid in saying that I would.  I stayed with him throughout the whole deployment.  It was rough, but when he came home, and I saw him for the first time - that was the BEST moment ever.

Let me tell you!  There are TONS of reasons why you should come to my town to visit me!!  I live in Chicago, IL - the third largest city in the U.S.  Let me tell you, it is amazing!  It is rich in culture, history, and fun! Also, the food is pretty amazing!

This is a view from my apartment in downtown Chicago!  I have a one bedroom apartment, but we have a futon and air mattress waiting for you! :]

Here are just a few of my favorite things to do in Chicago:

1.  FOOD!
I love eating out.  My favorite restaurant is Bub City.  There are a ton of awesome restaurants, and I love going to new ones.

2. TOURS!
I love going on Tours.  I've been on the Crime Tour, Pizza Tour, Architecture Boat Tour, and more.  They are so fascinating, and there are so many to choose from.

3. FESTIVALS!
There are so many festivals in Chicago.  Rib fest, Taste of Chicago, Beer fest, Blues fest and more.  They are fun and often free to go to!

4.  TRANSPORTATION!
If you need to go anywhere, you can take a cab, bus, or train.  Everything is so easily accessible and cheap.

5.  BUSY!
There is ALWAYS something to do here.  You can go to the beach, go to a museum, watch a sporting event, meet new people, etc.  I love that I am never bored and the people are friendly.  You have a big, crazy city with the Midwest feel.  That, my friends, is awesome!

So, stop what you're doing and come visit me! ;]

I have ALWAYS wanted to be a teacher.  I truly mean that.  My sister is 4 years older than me, and that was what she wanted to be.  I of course then wanted to do what my sister was doing.  We played school (she was usually the teacher because I was the youngest).  For my birthday or Christmas gifts I would get things from the teacher store.  For example, I would get a grade book, one of those easy grading scale guides, stickers, a pointer, notebooks, etc.  I was a "legit" teacher as child.  I loved it and I love every minute of teaching.  I honestly can't see myself doing anything else.  I also come from a family full of educators.  So, fun in the summer was helping my aunt set up her classroom or cut out letters using the die-cut machine.  I also love spending time in my classroom.  My husband calls me a work-a-colic, and I tell him it is a hobby!

Teaching is definitely a passion or we're all just crazy! :]

I just finished my fourth year of teaching.  I started a tradition my first year, and I do it every year now.  I give my students an end of the year gift on the last day of school.  Here is a peak at what I did this year.

I do something a little different every year depending on what I can find.  But, the idea is the same.  This year I included in the bucket a water bottle, flashcards (differentiated for each student), a dry erase sheet (where you take a page protector and place a piece of card stock inside it - then students use a dry erase marker to write on it), a dry erase marker, a notebook, markers, and a personalized note for each student.

I think the personalized note is my favorite.  The students are always so excited to read what I say.

I'll let you in on a secret too.  To save money I give students the remaining markers and dry erase markers from the year.  That way, I don't have to throw them out, and the kids can finish using them over the summer!  I buy most of my things at Dollar Tree or Target's Dollar Spot.

There is one more thing I always do.

On the last day, I take a picture with each student.  Then, when school is out I have them developed and I send each student the picture in the mail.  I write a little note saying I hope they're having a great start to summer, and I miss them already.  Then, I include the picture of me with the student.  I still have students that tell me the picture is hanging in their bedroom.  It is so sweet!  Students also love getting mail.  I don't want my babies to ever think I'll forget them!

I have found that even though teaching is a passion of mine, it can also be very difficult.  My advice is to always make time for yourself.  Don't get burnt out, and don't feel guilty if you're not spending every waking moment doing something for your classroom.  I have a hard time with this, and I battle it often.  However, you are not the best you if you do not make time for yourself.  You must take time to enjoy everything around you, and cherish every moment given to you.  Your classroom will still be there tomorrow, and you can try again.

Here is a quote I like by Dolly Parton.

You Think You Know... about Ashley Schroeder from Schroeder Shenanigans in 2nd

Hey hey all! Ashley here from Schroeder Shenanigans in 2nd! And I'm here to tell you a bit more about me in our "You Think You Know, but you have NO idea..." themed post of the month!!

Ok - so I am far from what you'd call an interesting person.  Ha.  I'm pretty boring - I play by the rules and I don't have too many crazy stories to tell.  In addition to boring, if there's one thing that I also am FOR SURE it's that I'm organized.  ... And I'm sure you're saying, ok Ashley, we already know this... get to the part that we would NEVER guess.  Am I right??..

Well.

Something you would NEVER guess about me - Miss-I-have-everything-in-its-place-at-all-times -

is that my desktop.  sadly. and embarrassingly.  looks.  like.  this.  .  .

How embarrassing?!?!?! And I'm the organization guru?!?!? Hardly.  Oh good gravy this needs added to my to-do list STAT!!!!! :)

Sooooooo I'm ALWAYSSS looking for a blogging buddy to grab a latte and a laptop with, so why don't you come on out to Brunswick, OH and visit me?!?!   I promise I won't make us blog and create the WHOLE time you're here!!  I grew up in Altoona, PA and lived there until I got married and moved to Ohio in 2011.  But EVERY summer, my husband and I (and sometimes friends, too!) LOVE to make sure we take advantage of the fact that  Cedar Point is just an hour down the road! - you know the ROLLER COASTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD?!

Here we are last summer outside of the Gate Keeper!! FAVORITE ROLLER COASTER EVER!!

Soooooo what are you waiting for?! Come on out to join us this summer!! :)

A teacher tradition of mine that I absolutely LOVE to do on the last day of school each year is that I write my kiddos an end of the year poem.

Each year, I write them a fun poem that rhymes, that calls each of them by name - noting something that I am going to miss most about each of them - and it recaps the highlights of our school year together.  I write a different poem each year, and I add it to the last page of their end of the year scrap books that we make so that they have their own copy to take home on the last day.  I love this tradition and hope to do it every single year of my career!

The first time I remember wanting to be a teacher was helping out my Aunt Susan to set up her classroom for back to school.

I was the kiddo that always WANTED to go back to school after summer.  I was EXCITED to go pick out my new school supplies and a new notebook or two.  And Aunt Susan would always take me with her to set up her 5th grade classroom before the new year started.  I knew that I wanted to someday have a classroom of my own to be able to set it up just right before that new group of kiddos walked in the door for the new year!    There have been SO many people who have inspired me as I have found, practiced, and fine tuned my passion - TEACHING. I'll share a video with you as well to tell you who inspires me most to always be the best teacher I can be! :)

If you have been following me for any amount of time... you know I live by 2 words...

BE YOU!!

I try to live by those two words each and every day.  I'm dorky, I'm emotional, I'm intense, I can be a little over the top, I'm anxious, I'm a workaholic... but I'm me.  And I am me every day all day.  Whether you're reading this as a first year teacher, as a TPT seller getting started, or even just as a teacher who has had a rough day... BE YOU.  Being the best version of yourself will lead you EXACTLY where you need to and are ultimately supposed to be :) Keep on being you.  You're the best one for the job :)

Thanks for reading!
